Käsipitsit / Laying Laces - Performance
Petra Valentova & Pavla Valentova
October 6th, 2007; 11 AM – 1 PM: Potkuri, Rauma

Using henna tattooing technique, my sister and me covered hands of participants by ornaments inspired by traditional Rauma laces. Images of laces were collected during my stay in Raumars, the Artists in Residency program in 2003. The laces were coming from one of my student's collection, majority of which she or her family made. The idea behind the performance is to cover the hands of Rauma citizens (and offspring of traditional lace makers) by ornaments derived from those laces. The performance bridges the tradition and memory; Rauma is known as the lace town, where the lace-making tradition has been passed down to new generations. The performance in symbolic ways talks about and describes this tradition.

Cooking for Rauma - Performance
Petra Valentova
October 6th, 2007; 3 PM: Lonnstrom Art Museum, Rauma

"Cooking for Rauma" performance links to Searching for a Sami Cookbook, published in September 2007. The Cookbook work was inspired by my stay in Raumars Artist Residency in 2003. I collected 12 recipes; in front of Rauma public I "cooked" desert recipe, given to me by Sami man. Since Sami are associated also with Finland, the performance rounded off the work that started in Rauma in 2003 and was finally brought to the end four years later by installation at the museum.
