Subdivision Art presents "Untitled": an exhibition by three Czech artists connected by origin who met in NYC. Petra Valentova, a graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (2001) and Hunter College, CUNY (2005), creates sculptures and large installations in public spaces. While primarily creating objects from classical materials such as wood, bronze and stone, Valentova is also working with performances, sound and video. ‘Flowers’ and ‘Animals Marble Series’, to be exhibited at the Subdivision Gallery are continuation of her older series "Market Art/So Long Ago I Can't Remember" (2001) and "Flowers" (2002-5). Using simplified, familiar forms, almost confining on design, these objects attempt to evoke in viewer memories and emotions of childhood. The smoothness and softness of the marble invite viewer to touch and feel the exhibits. Hana Cisarova, also a graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, uses in her paintings strong and vibrant colors to provoke tension. Her portraits - whether of the artist herself or of other people, often close family members or friends - seem to radiate feelings of frustration and loneliness, provoking uneasiness in the viewer as to their source. Veronika Adaskova, currently a student at Hunter Collage, CUNY, acts in her two photographic series ‘Siblings’ and ‘Birds’ as an observer. Her photographs of siblings mix real emotions with a performance for the camera. The ‘Birds’ series presents a world of unreal colors and detachment. |
